Tortoiseshell bunnies at 5 days
Topic: tortoiseshell

I finally got a good peek into Grindle's litter. She has an exceptionally large nest, and a lot of what Lil was complaining about in the comments is what has been happening to her litter. It started off at 7 healthy kits and they just kept getting lost in the nest. When Grindle went to feed the bunnies, some were swimming through fur trying to find her. We had a few cold nights when they were first born and some just didn't make it until the next feeding although I checked twice a day.

Part of the problem was that Grindle HATED the cardboard liner I put into her wire-drop nestcage. So after 12 hours of her being furious, I took it out. The nest got disrupted early on, and never got packed back correctly until yesterday and by then 3 bunnies had expired.

This bunny making business is fraught with uncertainty. Life is so fragile.

But, here on day 5 we have four healthy, well fed tortoiseshell babies. This color is much in demand by spinners and I cannot believe it is JUST the color of rabbit I need the most of (as does Betsy). So, I am grateful for them and that things are smoothing out in the nest.

They are so ADORABLE! And, yes, I'm a little jealous and a little bitten by the bunnie bug. Now it seems Didi isn't pregnant. (She loves the new nest box though and is lounging in it regularly.) So Destiny visited with the old man again. At least he gets the job done...(Any tips for a buck who can't seem to figure it out? Fortune tries, but never actually makes it.)

Lovely babies in both litters Claudia. I know I still want a male, but not sure about the color anymore. Thought I wanted black, but the torts are lovely also. Keep them all warm with this temp change we have coming-up and down, up and down! Our lambs don't know what to think.

Some bucks really don't get it. I have had some that waited until they were two before they got anywhere with a doe! I have decided that "laid back" is not a quality I encourage when I choose stud bucks. I will give a guy until 9 months to figure it out. After that, he has to find a new harem.

He might be too heavy, so try some exercise to get him in shape.

I keep my guys and girls far apart (separate barns) until it is time for breeding. I think this might help to keep their mating instinct just a little more trigger happy.

And some bucks are just more interested. Take Neo. I have never had a buck quite like him. He will breed with anything nearby, and it doesn't usually take him more than 2 minutes to get a doe interested (if she is even slightly in the mood). But he understands no, too, which is great news for does who really aren't ready.

Well, we won't know sexes for another two weeks. I'll let you know if a little black guy appears.

Um he is a little heavy. I've started cutting back with the warm weather. I was still going on deep winter feeding. I'll try that. He's a little older too. I decided not to do any breeding last winter so he didn't get a chance to try. I wouldn't call him "laid back." He was almost too rough, but he has settled down a bit, but still not getting it.
Thanks,
L
