The crickets are slowing down a tad around Countrywool, deer have GORGEOUS new antlers and families of turkeys stroll down the driveway and around the shop every day. Life in the country has marked summer's passage into fall. Back to school and back to knitting. Cool evenings sprinkled in with late summer's heat and humidity gets the knitter in me motivated!

Have you been promising yourself that THIS year you will attempt making a sweater for yourself or someone who is always complaining that they are cold? The all natural fiber yarns that Countrywool stocks give you LOTS of choices in fiber and fabric weight and color style. We have test-knit all of our yarns, and the samples are everywhere in the shop for you to feel and ask questions about BEFORE you take the plunge. The 4 class series will walk you through the whole process. Use the free circular and seamless pullover pattern supplied OR bring your own.
CLASSES THIS MONTH:
Sunday, September 9, 10 am - 12 noon. Handouts supplied. $35. Prepayment required.
KNIT A SIMPLE SEAMLESS SWEATER FOR YOURSELF + PERCENTAGE SWEATER KNITTING FOR HANDSPINNERS: Class 1: Gauge Hat.
This series of 4 classes will take any intermediate knitter through the process of making a sweater from a finished item, following the time honored way ethnic knitters have for centuries. Before any pattern plotting takes place, a gauge swatch needs to be made. Using any yarn and knitting needles students bring to class, a gauge hat will be knit as a swatch to use for figuring out details in the sweater design.
- 1 skein of yarn to use in making a gauge swatch hat (available for purchase, Cascade 220, Lamb's Pride worsted, Lanaloft worsted or Peace Fleece worsted suggested)
- 1 circular needle, 16” long, US #7 - US #9, to match yarn (available for purchase)
- Double pointed needles to match US size chosen above
- pencil, calculator, measuring tape and blank spiral notebook
Monday, September 17, 11-2 PM Spin A Yarn.
Ever wonder how it was done? Do you have sheep, alpacas, llamas, bunnies, sheep dogs or mohair goats in your life? Fashion yarn from their fur in a timeless fashion by hand on a drop spindle, or more quickly with a spinning wheel. No experience necessary to take this class! Handouts supplied.
- spinning wheel or drop spindle
- 4 - 8 oz clean wool roving or top
- 2 spinning wheels are available to rent for $20 by calling 828-4554. All items will be available for purchase: drop spindle: $25; wool roving: $8
RETREATS ON THE RADAR:
Friday through Sunday, November 2-4: North Atlantic Knitting Techniques at Winter Clove Inn, Round Top, NY. Come and relax with a fabulous group of knitters while you learn a few new things and laugh a lot. $175 for the classes; $230 for your room and meals. Bring your friends and have a grand time in the gorgeous Catskill Mountains.
